Capcom may want to loosen its grip on Smurfberries for little ones. The bright, colorful game is just an eyeball magnet. Though I am definitely an audience for this as a longtime fan of the Smurfs, Smurfs' Village will attract a pretty big younger audience, too. This is my one concern with Smurfs' Village. Those can go pretty fast if you start buying the named Smurfs. Smurfs' Village doesn't hand them out very quickly, so if you want to leapfrog, get ready to pay a minimum of $4.99 for 50 Smurfberries. Smurfberries, though, aren't cheap to come by. Smurfberries are the special in-game currency you use for speeding production on a project or buying some of the named Smurfs' houses. Because this is a freemium game, there has to be a mechanism for Capcom to make a little cash. There are actually a number of minigames to unlock in the village, such as Painter Smurf's coloring game. Greedy Smurf has a bakery where you play short minigames to earn experience and coins every day. Other Smurfs need to be installed over time, such as Smurfette, who has the special power of increasing the experience earned by Smurfs around here. Jokey Smurf gives you a present every morning, such as cookies. Papa Smurf strolls the village and when you tap him, he tells you your current objective (there seems to be one per level, such as growing carrots to feed a family of rabbits). Each comes with a Smurf that pitches in with the garden or building other structures. So you need to build mushroom houses in the village. The FarmVille stuff gets rolling with garden patches get you started with making a little coin. But thankfully, Smurfs' Village is based on the original books and cartoons that enchanted a generation and apparently have some staying power. When Capcom first told me it was making Smurfs' Village, I was terrified that it meant the upcoming computer animated movie, which looks to stomp out all nostalgia.
